Electronics and Computer Science at the Univeristy of Southampton is one of the first dedicated departments for electronics in the world dating back to 1947,. A dedicated Microelectronics Research Group was formed as long ago as 1961 and one of the first professional standard semiconductor fabrication facilities in any university was established in the 1960s. Today, the University is home to one of the premium multidisciplinary fabrication facilities in Europe, which recently installed the world's second advanced E-beam lithography facility, in a major boost to UK national capabilities.

The INTERPOSE-UK project was one of 16 projects funded by Innovate UK to improve and scale-up semiconductor manufacturing and supply chains. The aim of the project was to develop UK capability to produce bespoke interposers, enabling UK companies to capitalise on the heterogeneous integration technologies needed for next generation chip integration. Interposers are functional substrates that enable electrical connectivity between different semiconductor chips in advanced packaging applications.
