About

Within the School of Engineering the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research activities cover a range of research interests from traditional strengths in microelectronics through real world solutions for communications, sensing and signal processing and are in the top 10 in the UK for world-leading research.

Within the microelectronics group there is a focus embedded systems, microelectronics and autonomous systems and specifically:

  • design and develop core circuits, algorithms, and microsystems with low to zero energy footprints
  • design embedded systems using microcontroller units and programmable logic
  • implementation of microelectronics into physical CMOS chips
  • mathematical and computational models and paradigms
  • fundamental physics through challenges in fabrication processes

With applications focus in medical and artificial intelligence domains.

Within the Intelligent Sensing and Communications (ISC) group the three areas of interest are:

  1. Communications - including wireless, optical and underwater acoustic communications.
  2. Signal Processing - including machine learning and AI, for applications in security, healthcare, environment and finance.
  3. Sensor Systems - for non-destructive testing/evaluation, biomedical sensing/imaging and environment monitoring.
