The Newcastle University contribution to the IKC is led by Professor Rishad Shafik. Rishad is Professor in Microelectronic Systems and has research interests in hardware/software co-design applied in energy-efficient and reliable machine learning systems. The aim of the research is ensuring energy efficiency and autonomy at low cost for current and future generations of electronic systems. Research will investigate how applications, such as artificial intelligence, exercise the underlying hardware architecture and investigate opportunities to:
- reduce complexity in favour of energy reduction
- control power/performance parameters autonomously to ensure energy-efficiency
- develop new architectures that are by-design energy-efficient, autonomous and reliable
The work involves modelling, prototyping and implementation of low-cost hardware and system-level methodologies.
