It was a pleasure to attend the REACT/Tech
Works Semiconductor Industry Workshop at the Royal Society on 18 September 2025. The event is one of a growing number bringing the semiconductor community together. A key aim was to improve industry–academia collaboration around making the UK electronics industry sustainable.
REACT is a unique cross-institution research initiative supporting the electronics industry to become sustainable by transitioning to circular economics and reducing emissions. Despite the positive transformative impact electronics have had on daily life, the industry faces poorly understood issues that negatively impact the planet.
Paul Jarvie (CS Catapult) opened with an overview of the main REACT themes and the urgent need for environmentally driven design — including energy efficiency during useful life, re-use and life extension of parts, and recovery of materials at end of life.
CHIMES can help connect these sustainability priorities with the UK’s heterogeneous integration and systems design community.
