We are pleased to share a new opening for a Research Assistant or Research Associate in Hardware–Software Co-Design for Heterogeneous Integrated Circuits, based at Newcastle University’s School of Engineering.

About the Role

Located within the Microsystems AI (MAI) Lab and reporting to Professor Rishad Shafik, the successful candidate will focus on hardware–software co-design, exploring how algorithmic workloads translate into high-performance, energy-efficient heterogeneous IC architectures. Working alongside CHIMES² consortium partners, you will investigate key methods for integrating specialised chiplets using diverse semiconductor technologies into unified, secure, and scalable microchip platforms.

  • Location: Newcastle University (Microsystems Research Group)
  • Contract: Full-time, Fixed-term (up to 36 months)
  • Salary
    • Research Assistant: £33,951 – £35,608 per annum
    • Research Associate: £35,608 – £38,784 per annum
  • Closing Date: 29 September 2026

Candidate Requirements

We are seeking motivated researchers with a background in electrical/electronic engineering, microelectronics, IC design, computer engineering, or a related field:

  • Research Assistant: Holds an Honours degree (or equivalent experience) with technical knowledge in mixed-signal/digital IC design flows, EDA tools, and hardware–software co-design principles.
  • Research Associate: Holds a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant discipline, alongside a track record of publications or conference presentations and strong analytical capabilities.
