Members of CHIMES2 recently attended the "Innovations in Semiconductor Technologies" event, hosted at the University of Edinburgh. The gathering brought together key representatives from across the UK’s semiconductor ecosystem, including researchers, spin-outs, industry partners, and policy leads, to explore half a century of semiconductor heritage and showcase the next generation of microelectronic innovation. The event highlighted Edinburgh’s rich research landscape and real-world case studies, demonstrating how academic research and cross-sector collaboration are shaping the future of the UK semiconductor sector.
CHIMES Co-I, Regius Chair of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and Head of Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems (IMNS) Themis Prodromakis welcomed a packed lecture theatre to the event before we heard from Professor Anthony Walton, Bruce Rae (STMicroelectronics), David Milne (Founder and former CEO Wolfson Microelectronics), Peter Lomax (SMC) and Shiwei Wang (Centre for Electronics Frontiers).
The afternoon kicked off with Keynote from Sir Robin Saxby titled "A walk through life - successes / failures / lessons" before the final presentations of the day from Andy McLean (CEO of the UK Semiconductor Centre) and Doug Baney (Keysight Technologies).
